Drinking is built into dorm life, Greek life, game days, and weekends, and most students are away from family for the first time. For a student in recovery, or one who just finished treatment, going back to campus without support can put both sobriety and enrollment at risk. NMG Recovery Consulting works with college students and their families across the country to help students stay sober and stay in school.
How a companion supports a student
A companion helps a student build a weekly structure that balances classes, studying, sleep, exercise, and recovery work. They help find campus recovery programs and local meetings, plan ahead for high-risk weekends, and handle social situations without pulling away from friends. For students who need more support, a companion can stay nearby or spend set hours with them each day.
Returning to school after treatment
Many students take a semester off for treatment, and going back is a big step. A companion can help with move-in and the first weeks of the term. If a reduced course load or accommodations make sense, they can help the student prepare for those conversations with professors or the dean’s office.
Support for parents
Parents of college students in recovery are often far away and worried. A companion gives you someone on the ground who knows what’s happening and can respond if things start to slip. We help families set up a communication plan that respects the student’s independence and keeps parents informed when the student agrees to share.
Schools we support
We work with students at colleges and universities in all 50 states, from large public universities to small private colleges and graduate programs. Companions can travel to campus wherever your student is enrolled.
Frequently Asked Questions
Companions keep a low profile on campus. Many students introduce them as a mentor or a friend, and the companion follows the student’s lead.
Companions aren’t tutors, but they help students build study routines, keep track of deadlines, and connect with campus academic support.
